Yusuf - Part Five

In `Uyoon Akhbar ar-Rida: In the chapter on the gathering of ar-Rida عليه السلام at [the court of] al-Ma'mun with the People of the Book and the discourses and what he responded to `Ali b. al-Jahm regarding the infallibility of the prophets صلوات الله عليهم - a long hadith, in which he عليه السلام says: "As for His saying regarding Yusuf عليه السلام: 'She was tempted with him, and he was tempted with her.' (12:24) She was tempted to sin, and Yusuf was tempted to kill her. He informed her of the seriousness of what she was getting into, so Allah averted the temptation to kill her and to commit obscenity. And that is His saying: 'And thus it was that We avert evil and obscenity from him.' (12:24) - meaning, killing and fornication."

And in another chapter on the gathering of ar-Rida عليه السلام at [the court of] al-Ma'mun regarding the infallibility of the prophets: In his isnad to `Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Jahm. He said: I attended the court of al-Ma'mun, and ar-Rida عليه السلام was with him, so al-Ma'mun said to him: "O son of the Messenger of Allah! Is it not your doctrine that the prophets are infallible?" He said: "Of course." He said: "Then what is the meaning of the saying of Allah عز وجل? Tell me about the saying of Allah تعالى: 'She was tempted with him, and he was tempted with her were it not for the proof he had seen from his Lord.' (12:24)" So ar-Rida عليه السلام said: "She was tempted with him, and if he had not seen the proof from his Lord, he would have been tempted with her just as she had been tempted with him. However, he was immaculate (ma`soom), and the immaculate one is not tempted to sin. My father narrated to me from as-Sadiq عليه السلام that he said: 'She was tempted to commit, and he was tempted to not commit.'" Al-Ma'mun said: "This is from Allah, O Abu'l Hasan." (?)

And in another chapter about what came from ar-Rida عليه السلام: From this isnad from `Ali b. al-Husayn عليهما السلام. He said, regarding the saying of Allah عز وجل: "were it not for the proof he had seen from his Lord." (12:24). He said: "The wife of al-`Aziz went to an idol and gave it a robe. So Yusuf said to her: 'What is this?' So she said: 'Have shame, for the idol sees us.' So Yusuf said to her: 'Have shame for something that does not hear, does not see, does not eat, does not drink; but do not have shame for the One who created and taught humanity?' And that is His saying: 'were it not for the proof he had seen from his Lord.' (12:24)"

In the Amali of as-Saduq رحمه الله: In his isnad to Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said to `Alqama: "The wants of the people do not reign, and their talk does not set [the true doctrine]. How would they be delivered from that which the prophets of Allah, His messengers, and the Proofs of Allah have not been delivered from? Do they not allege that Yusuf عليه السلام was tempted to fornicate?" And the hadith is long, we have taken the needed part from it.

In Tafsir al-`Ayashi: From one of our companions from Abu `Abdullah عليه السلام. He said: "When she was tempted by him, and he was tempted by her, she said to him: 'Remain where you are.' He said: 'Why?' She said: 'So that I may cover the face of of this idol so that it does not see us.' So he remembered Allah at that, and he knew that Allah saw him, so he ran away from her."

From Muhammad b. Qays from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: I heard him say: "When Yusuf removed his trousers, he saw the form of Ya`qub biting his nails, saying to him: 'Yusuf!'" He said: "So he ran." Then Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: "However, by Allah, I have never seen the private (`awra) of my father, nor had my father ever seen the private of my grandfather, nor had my grandfather ever seen the private of his father." He said: "And he was biting his nails. So he leaped, and the water (saliva?) came from his hallux." (?)

From one of our companions from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام. He said: "What do people say regarding the saying of Allah عز وجل: 'were it not for the proof had had seen from his Lord.' (12:24)?" I said: "They say: He saw Ya`qub biting his nails." So he said: "No, it is not as they say." So I said: "So what did he see?" He said: "When she was tempted by him, and he was tempted by her, she went to an idol in her house and cast a garment over it. So Yusuf said to her: 'What did you do?' She said: 'I cast a garment over it. I am too embarrassed to allow it to see me.'" He said: "So Yusuf said: 'You are embarrassed from your idol, and it does not hear or see. Should I not be embarrassed from my Lord?"

From Is`haq b. Bashar from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: "Allah revealed to Yusuf when he was in prison: 'O son of Ya`qub! What has made you reside with the wrongdoers?' He said: 'My crime.' So he acknowledged that his sitting with her was like that of a [strange] man and woman without her family."

In Kitab al-Ihtijaj of al-Tabrisi: From Amir al-Mu'mineen عليه السلام, in a long hadith in which he عليه السلام says in response to a heretic: "The errors of the prophets have been made known in His saying regarding Yusuf: 'She was tempted with him, and he was tempted with her were it not for the proof he had seen from his Lord' (12:24). As for the errors of the prophets عليهم السلام and what Allah has explained in His Book: that is from the indicators to the remarkable wisdom of Allah عز وجل, His omnipotent power, and His manifest glory; for He knew that the signs of the prophets عليهم السلام were grand in the hearts of their nations, and that some of them would them as gods, just as the Christians did with the son of Mary. So, He mentioned it as a sign that distinguishes them from the perfection that is uniquely His عز وجل."

In Kitab Ma`ani al-Akhbar: In his isnad to Khalaf b. Hamad from a man from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: "Allah عز وجل: 'And thus it was that we avert evil and obscenity from him.' (12:24) Meaning, enjoining in fornication."

In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim: My father narrated to me from one of his companions who raised it. He said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام said: "When she was tempted by him, and he was tempted by her, she went to the idol in her house and cast a thin garment over it. So Yusuf said to her: 'What are you doing?' She said: 'I have cast a garment over this idol so that it may not see me, for I am embarrassed from it.' So Yusuf said: 'You are embarrassed from an idol that does not hear nor sees. Should I not be embarrassed from my Lord?' So he ran, and she grabbed him from his back. Then, al-`Aziz came to them at this moment, and that is the saying of Allah: 'They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door.' (12:25) So the wife of al-`Aziz instigated and said: 'What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?' (12:25). So Yusuf said to al-`Aziz: 'It was she who sought to seduce me. And a witness from her family testified.' (12:26) So Allah عز وجل to Yusuf, instructing him to say to the king: 'Ask this child in this cradle, for he will bear witness that she sought to seduce me.' So al-`Aziz asked the child, and Allah caused the child to speak in the cradle to Yusuf until he said: 'If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars. But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful.' (12:26-27) So when al-`Aziz saw that the shirt of Yusuf was torn from the back, he said to his wife: 'Surely, it is of the woman's plot. Surely, your plot is serious.' (12:28) Then, he said to Yusuf: 'Ignore this. And [my wife], ask forgiveness for your mistake. Surely you were of the mistaken.' (12:29)"

In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim and in the narrations of Abu'l Jarud: From Abu Ja`far عليه السلام regarding His saying: "He has impassioned her with love" (12:30): "Her love for him shrouded her, to the point where she would not think of anyone other than him. And the shroud is passion, and passion is the shroud of the heart."

"This is not but a noble angel" (12:31): And Abu Sa`eed al-Khudri reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله describing Yusuf when he saw him on the second heaven: "I saw a man whose form was like that of the full moon. I said: 'O Jibra'il, who is this?' He said: 'This is your brother, Yusuf.'"

In Tafsir al-`Ayashi from Muhammad b. Marwan from a man from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: "Yusuf proposed to a beautiful woman, so she replied to him: 'O slave of the king, are you proposing to me?' So he proposed to her through her father, so her father said to him: 'It is up to her.' So he proposed to her through his Lord and wept, so Allah revealed to him: 'I have married her to you.' So he sent her a message saying: 'I would like to visit you.' So she replied saying: 'Come.' So when he came to her, the house was illuminated with his light. So she said: 'This is not but a noble angel (12:31), so pray for rain.' So she went to a container to give him water, and he took the container from her hand, put it to her mouth and said to her: 'Wait and do not rush.' So he married her."
