Regarding the Occultation of Ibrahim

My father and Muhammad b. al-Hasan They said: Sa`d b. `Abdillah narrated from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Hisham b. Salim from Abu Baseer from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.

He said: The father of Ibrahim عليه السلام was Nimrod b. Canaan’s astrologer, and Nimrod would not act without seeking his opinion. So he examined the stars one night from the nights; then it became morning, so he said: I saw a strange thing during my night. So Nimrod said to him: And what was it? So he said: I saw a newborn being born in our land here, and he will destroy us by his hand, and there does not remain but a short time before his mother becomes pregnant with him. So Nimrod was astounded by that, and he said to him: Are any women pregnant with him yet? So he said: No. And he was given knowledge that he would be burned in fire, but he did not know that he would be saved by Allah تعالى.

He said: So the women were separated from the men. No woman was left but that she was made to leave the city so that the men would not interact with them. And Ibrahim’s father (Abu Ibrahim) had come upon his wife (i.e. he had intercourse with her), so she became pregnant by it, and he suspected that he was the father. So he commissioned women from the tribes – [they were so skilled that] there would not be a thing in her womb but that they knew about it. So they examined the mother of Ibrahim, but Allah تعالى forced what was in the womb to the back. They said: We have not found a thing in her womb. When the mother of Ibrahim gave birth [to him], his father wanted to take him to Nimrod, so his wife told him: Do not take your son to Nimrod, for he will kill him. Allow me to take him to one of the caves; I will leave him there until his time [of death] comes so that it is not you that kills your son. So he said to her: So take him. So she took him to a cave, then she suckled him, then she put a boulder at the entrance of the cave, then she left him. So Allah عز وجل provided His sustenance through his thumb, so he would suck it and drink milk. He would grow (mature) more in a day than another [infant] would grow in one week; and he would grow more in one week than another would grow in one month; and he would grow more in one month than another would grow in one year. What Allah willed to happen had happened. So his mother said to his father: If you permit me, I will go to that boy so that I may see what I have done. He said: So do so. So she entered the cave and she came across Ibrahim عليه السلام and his eyes shone like two lamps. So she took him and brought him to her breast and suckled him, then she left him. So his father asked her about the boy, and she wept and said: I have put him in the dust (i.e. I have buried him). She would leave when needed and go to Ibrahim عليه السلام, embrace him, suckle him, then leave. Whenever she moved, his mother would meet him and do as she did (i.e. suckle him). Whenever she wanted to leave, he would take her by her dress, and she would say: What do you want? So he would say: Take me with you. So she said: Once I receive your father’s permission.
