The report of Ibn Hawash al-Muqbil from Sham

He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr and Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr al-Bazanti together from Aban b. `Uthman al-Ahmar from Aban b. Taghlib from `Ikrama from ibn `Abbas.

He said: When the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم called for Ka`b b. Asad to strike his neck, he came out – and this was during the Battle of Banu Quraytha – the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم looked at him and said to him: O Ka`b, did the advice (wasiyya) of ibn Hawash not benefit you, who proceeded from Sham and said, “I have abandoned wine and luxury, and I have adopted sharp [conditions] and dates for a prophet who will rise at this time. He will appear in Mecca, and this is the abode that he will migrate to. And he is the cheerful fighter. He will eat dry bread and dates, and he will ride bare mules. In his eyes there is ruddiness, and between his shoulders is the Seal of Prophethood. He will set his sword upon his shoulder, and he will not care for those who meet him [in battle]. His dominion will extend successively over [all areas accessible to] the camels and the hooves”. Ka`b said: That is so, O Muhammad. If the Jews would not have mocked me for cowardice during the fighting, I would have believed in you and trusted you. But rather, I am upon the Jewish religion – I lived upon it, and I will die upon it. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Proceed to strike his neck. So he (i.e. the executioner) proceeded and struck his neck.
